Preventing Mould on Synthetic Grass: What to Do

Synthetic turf is the go-to alternative for playing fields and courts. Ideally, you want something that will stay evergreen for the least possible cost. Even though you will have to dig deep into your pockets during installation, you will offset that expenditure with very few maintenance demands in the long-term.

One of the few things you need to do is to keep the turf free of mould. Mould ruins the quality of the synthetic grass through discolouration. It can also lead to infections among those who use the pitch quite often. To prevent the effects of mould, here is what you should do:

Aerate the Turf

Proper aeration is an important factor in preventing the growth of mould on your synthetic turf. During installation, fibres are compacted together to ensure that the turf is comfortable enough for the players. However, this compaction limits the proper circulation of air in the turf and creates suitable conditions for the development of mould.

You need to aerate the turf artificially using a turf aerator to enhance circulation of air and reduce excessive compaction. The machine has spiked rolls that lift sand and rubber based turfs, readying them for any additional grooming. These rolls also help to regenerate the turf by bringing the in-fill material to the surface.

Brush the Turf

Brushing is another important step in keeping your synthetic turf free of mould. Buy a synthetic grass brush in a nearby accessory shop and use it to comb the surface of the turf. This will improve the movement of air between each of the fibres, impairing the growth of mould. It will also keep the synthetic grass straight, fresh and looking alive. Additionally, the upper level of the infill is properly levelled as a result of brushing, guaranteeing proper inclination of the whole field.

Rake the Turf

A synthetic turf also has to be raked every now and then. Buy a rake designed specifically for synthetic turfs and not ordinary grass. Rake through the various sections of the turf until you cover the whole area. Raking helps to maintain the structural integrity of the fibres and keeps them from matting down despite the regular and intensive use of the field.

Scrub the Turf

A synthetic turf must be scrubbed and conditioned to prevent mould. With time, dirt will accumulate on the synthetic turf. When combined with water, the dirt forms a perfect habitat for mould. Use industrial cleaners meant for synthetic turfs to remove grease and other forms of dirt.
